Is it acceptable that terrific and terrible are opposite words?

Sure.. and it's not so *terribly* "abnormal" -- This sort of shift in meaning is common in language. And this PARTICULAR sort of shift, and even "reversal" -- of a word related to CAUSING FEAR AND WONDER (which, notice, is not necessarily completely 'negative' to start with!) -- has several examples in English. It's easier to make sense of when you recognize that the shift took place one reasonable step at a time. Here's generally what has happened: 1) Some have kept their earlier meaning, at least to some extent. Especially, those based on the VERB form -- horrifying, terrifying, frightening, stupefying (also horrific) 2) But MANY of these are weakened to 'causing WONDER, making a strong impression' cf. 'terrible noise'. . . 3) From this they may become more general INTENSIVE forms, to describe things that invite a strong reaction/impression but no longer one of "fear": a) They may take a negative sense (the most common development), meaning 'very bad (in quality or behavior), very poorly done' - awful, horrendous, horrible, terrible, dreadful, frightful b) OR in some cases, a positive sense - terrific, tremendous, stupendous (compare 'wonderful' and, in a slightly different sense, 'awesome') A further development is the creation of adverbs from some of these words -- with the ending -ly, and the intensive sense "very"-- dreadfully frightfully, horribly, terribly, awfully, tremendously. It is not uncommon, in colloquial use, for these to be used with a POSITIVE expression -- e.g., "awfully nice", "terribly funny", "frightfully good"

Do people know that what Harvard did by restricting gym access to men is illegal?

Sigy you're really showing your 15-year-old age on here with a comment like that. Most men don't sit around staring at the women, we actually work out. I've seen a lot more women standing around taking up space talking at the gym than I've seen guys standing around taking up space staring at women, but nobody does anything about that. Thankfully that's not really a problem at the gym I work out at now, but the gym where I went to college had tons of those girls. Even many other girls complained about it. Nobody did anything of course, but there was actually talk of having a women's only room, even though there wasn't a single known complaint to support doing it. I think it's discriminatory, but Harvard is a private school. As a result, unless there is a specific law targeting it (which the law you state might do, but I don't know) they have a lot more leeway than a public school would. Also, it's being done in the name of religion, not gender. Even though it's men and not, say Christians or Hindus who aren't allowed (from what I read, all women, not just Muslim, can make use of those hours) they can use religion to justify it, which sounds better than gender discrimination. But I don't know what the law states, so you might be right. Still, it'll be pretty hard to overturn it at a private college. Rusty- Actually Curves is a private gym. They can do what they want. Harvard is a little different. It does help that Harvard has other gyms, at least. If they had male-only hours, I wouldn't have a problem with it. But I actually support Curves (thereotically speaking) because it's a private gym.

what are some of the most unique things you have ever seen used to decorate for Christmas? what did you think

upside down Christmas trees, old green garden hoses cut to look like garlands (like the paper chains), different colored ornaments made from aluminum cans, 2 liter bottles painted and laid on their sides for birdhouses/bird feeders that looked like they were decorated for Christmas, and a wreath made from used plastic grocery bags and spray painted. This was so cool to me because I love a homemade type Christmas and candlemas and since my friends and I are Pagan and we try to recycle as much as we can they came up with all these wonderful ideas for an eco-friendly Christmas. They even collected all the old fake Christmas trees they find that people get rid of in yard sales or throw away and wash them, decorate with bottle caps, aluminum shiny stuff, and line their front yard with them. And it did look beautiful. Everyone drives by to see it and until you walk up to it you can't tell if the ornaments are made of real store bought stuff or recycled things. I wish I was that crafty! Merry Yule! Merry Candlemas! Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah! Feliz Navidad! Bien Noel! ( that's all I can remember ;) lol

Surfing in Raritan bay? Morgan, NJ specifically or close by? How is it? Does it exist?

You are right near the GSP. Go down the Parkway, and from Cape May to sandy Hook you have good rideable surf. http://www.surfline.com/surf-report/sandy-hook-northeast_5164/travel/ http://www.surfline.com/surf-report/monmouth-northeast_5163/travel/ Up close and personal, you have Sandy Hook, Monmouth and Monmouth Beach. New Jersey is like Denny's. You don't set out to go there --it's just a place you end up. It's not always warm, and never lush or tropical, but, fortunately, for anyone who has to travel here for one reason or another, it's a place that gets lots of good waves. At almost any surf travel destination in the world, you're likely to run into at least one surfer from Jersey. Be friendly, and you'll be invited to stay with them when you end up in Jersey. That would be good for you, because it's expensive. New Jersey, one of the most densely populated states in the union, is not a cheap stay. In the summer, people from all over the eastern half of the country flock to the shore. Hotels are full; rooms are expensive. The winter should be cheaper, but it isn't. So many places shut down for the winter, that the few that remain open are rather pricey, too. Making friends here is the way to go. Despite what you hear, there aren't toxic waste dumps around every bend, and the water is no worse than in surrounding areas. With one of the oldest and most extensive water-testing programs in the country, New Jersey beaches close when things get murky. The water quality today is as good as it's been in the past 30 years -- and at least as good as most southern California breaks I have been surfing New Jersey for over 40 years (although I admit that I have spent most of my time from Atlantic City south)

    a question about body image?

I used to think in the same way. its because u r losing ur confidence and gaining infurity complex. Actually, u shouldnt lose ur confidence according to how u look, but it is natural. I understand. Try this - Drink green tea. fastest way to lose weight healthyly. Experts and researchers say that 5 cups of green tea is a magic number to weight loss. Eat a lot of fruits ( no mangoes and banana ) and vegetables. They are low in calories and healthy and make u feel full for a long time. Have complex carbs like wheat. drink only skimed milk if u want to. Avoid cheese and butter. u can have peanut butter sometimes. AVOID RICE, FRIED FOOD, SWEETS. Drink half glass of water before ur meal and AVOID water for half an hour after the meal. It help in digestion and can reduce waistline. if u want to have sweet , eat a smalllll piece of darrrrrrrrk chocolate. (small, very very very small !) do running or brisk walking for at least 5 times a week. enjoy swimming, sports and have an active life , not of a couch potato ... do lots of crunches and stretches. Have slow walks after dinner. No dinner after 8.00 p.m.actually after 7.00.p.m. do not sleep for 3 hours after dinner. dont even roll on bed. No sleeping in the afternoon. U must have breakfast, it works wonders in weight loss. Have egg white with brown bred for breakfast. have breakfast heavy, midium lunch and light dinner.
